Area Attractions
With a world-class Spa, championship golf and more, you
may never wish to leave La Costa. However, the resort's
location in north coastal San Diego puts you within easy
reach of some outstanding, internationally renowned attractions.
Legoland California. Just minutes away,
Legoland is the only theme park of its kind in America.
It features more than 50 major rides, attractions and interactive
activities built around the famous Lego blocks.
Museum of Making Music. This new museum,
located at the headquarters of the National Association
of Music Merchants next to Legoland, traces the history
of innovations in popular music in exhibits that date back
to 1890. More than 450 rare musical instruments are on display
here, and a research library and archives are also available.
Carlsbad Village-by-the-Sea. Visitors will
want to stroll through this quaint seaside town to admire
its beautiful New England and Mediterranean-style architecture,
tree-lined streets and abundance of boutiques, antiques
and restaurants. There's even a small town train station.
Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. Each Spring,
a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean is transformed
into a 50-acre rainbow of millions of brightly colored Ranunculus
blossoms. It is one of the very few places in the world
where the general public is invited to walk down guided
pathways to experience so magnificent an array of blooms.
San Diego Wild Animal Park. This 1,800-acre
park originated as a breeding facility for the San Diego
Zoo's larger mammals. Today, it is home to more than 2,500
animals including tigers, lions, elephants, rhinoceros,
hippopotamus and giraffes. The main park exhibit is an open
plain habitat that recreates African, Asian and Australian
grasslands, including more than 250 species of exotic plants.
San Diego Zoo. The World-Famous San Diego
Zoo sits on 100 acres in beautiful Balboa Park. The Zoo
cares for more than 4,000 individual animals representing
800 different species and has a collection of more than
6,500 species of plants. Balboa Park, which is also home
to 15 museums and various arts and international culture
associations, is one of the nation's largest cultural and
entertainment complexes.
Temecula Valley Wine Country. The Valley is
home to 12 wineries, all offering daily tastings and tours.
Some feature picnic areas. Visitors can also tour Old
Town Temecula, a historic town offering Old West ambiance,
folk art and antiques. Visitors can even take a hot-air
balloon ride for a bird's eye view of the Valley.
SeaWorld Adventure Park. SeaWorld is the place
to witness impressive performances by Shamu the killer
whale, acrobatic dolphins, fearsome sharks in the "Shark
Encounter," or take in one of many bird shows. Other featured
attractions include the "Penguin Encounter," "Manatee
Rescue," "Wild Arctic" and the "Shipwreck Rapids" ride.
Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Located in
La Jolla, The Birch Aquarium at Scripps is a fascinating
museum focusing on ocean science and conservation. Here,
more than 30 tanks teem with marine life from the cold
waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical South
Pacific. The Aquarium also has outdoor demonstration tide
pools and hands-on exhibits.
