Professional Golf Returns to La Costa Resort and Spa
With a Brand New LPGA Tournament in 2010

Carlsbad, Calif. (November 2009) – La Costa Resort and Spa announced this week the return of professional golf to the resort in 2010 in the form of a brand new Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament. Presented by J Golf, the LPGA Classic will be played March 22-28, 2010 at La Costa Resort and Spa. It will be the first event of 2010 in the mainland United States for the LPGA, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary.

“We’ve missed having a professional golf tournament at the resort and are thrilled to welcome the LPGA in 2010,” said April Shute, vice president and general manager. “We anticipate that this will be a boost for both the resort and our surrounding business community.”

The LPGA has signed a five-year agreement with J Golf and La Costa Resort and Spa to hold the tournament in Carlsbad through 2014. The LPGA Classic Presented by J Golf is a 144-player event that will bring the biggest names in women’s golf to coastal North San Diego County.
Mexican superstar and Rolex Rankings number one Lorena Ochoa, Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year Jiyai Shin, American number one Cristie Kerr, young American stars Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Brittany Lincicome, and other standouts such as Japan’s Ai Miyazato are expected to headline a strong field as players prepare for the meat of the LPGA season.

Tickets and information on volunteer opportunities for the LPGA Classic Presented by J Golf are available at the tournament’s official web site, www.lpga.com.
La Costa will host an official LPGA event for the first time when it welcomes the LPGA Classic Presented by J Golf, though the majestic, coastal resort is no stranger to professional tournaments. La Costa most recently hosted the PGA TOUR’s World Golf Championships (WGC) Accenture Match Play Championship (1999-2006). Its longest-running tournament brought the PGA TOUR’s best to La Costa from 1969-1998, first as the Tournament of Champions and later as the Mercedes Championship. It also hosted the CBS Golf Classic in 1965, and was home to the Haig Scotch Mixed Foursome Championship from 1965-67.

The LPGA tournament announcement comes on the heels of another significant sports event returning to La Costa in 2010 - the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. The tennis event will be one of the ten tournaments (five WTA and five ATP) comprising the Olympus US Open Series and will replace the LA Women’s Tennis Championship in the beginning of August on the Tour calendar.
